A growing worry festered in Koradin’s stomach. Had his small army prevailed over the voreen or had they all been slaughtered? If they were all dead, Ashbourn would be lost. It was past midday and the sun actually shone, though nightfall came earlier every day.

He should be out there fighting by their side, but Chronor would probably know if he went missing. So he hoped his small army could bring home the precious blade. If Ara can even carry it. A stab of guilt made him scrunch his face. He had helped deceive that poor young woman. Hopefully, she had been reunited with Khendric and Topper and they could stop lying. As long as they’re still alive.

Koradin had skipped the last council meeting because they would ask about the missing troops and uselessly berate him. For now, he hid in the massive tower of his estate with an excellent view over the city. His mansion resembled a smaller castle and had been built into the wall of Ashbourn, placing him exactly where he needed to be. All three of his daughters and wife were with him in the tower. He stared out over the city, while the others discussed what to do if his plan failed, and the more time dragged on, the more his gut feeling told him they were right. And he knew the only sensible thing to do if this plan failed was to flee.

“Together,” Matt’s voice said. “We can beat him.”

Koradin sighed, thankful for the pharlanax’s words, but couldn’t answer. If he let them know about the conscious ancient being inside his head, they’d think him crazy.

The door burst open and Koradin turned sharply to see Garys, his most trusted messenger, completely out of breath. “They’re back,” he shouted, panting. “They’re back!”

Koradin and his family all followed the messenger through the guarded hallways of his mansion. Every soldier they passed left their station and joined the growing ensemble as they reached the terrace overlooking the vast fields outside the city. In the far distance, an army approached.

“They’re waving just one torch,” Garys said and pointed.

“What?” Koradin grabbed the spyglass from him.

“Over there!” Garys pointed and Koradin saw easily only one torch with his enhanced vision, next to a large dark-green voreen blade. They made it. It had come at a heavy cost; the army greatly reduced.

“I don’t believe it,” Koradin said, astonished.

“Give me that,” Lenda said and looked for herself. “I don’t believe it either.”

“We have to initiate the plan now,” he said to Garys. “Tell Commander Relen to take out the guards.” Garys nodded and ran off to find the commander. Koradin turned to his wife and three daughters. “Don’t leave the Headquarters, okay?”

They nodded, and Lenda grabbed his chin and gave him a gentle kiss. Her eyes said, “Don’t let it be our final one.” He leaned in for a real passionate kiss, and embraced her in a hug. His beautiful daughters joined. “I love all of you,” he said. “And whatever happens, know that I’m forever proud of you all.
